German Spy Museum (Deutsches Spionagemuseum) is located at Leipziger Platz in the center of the capital of Germany. The square was destroyed during the Second World War. During Cold War it was no man’s land at the Berlin Wall. It is very close to Checkpoint Charlie, famous Berlin Wall crossing point between East Berlin and West Berlin, that was also ‘Octopussy’ filming location.

To enter the museum you have to validate your ticket and walk through double door. It takes… 007 seconds before second door opens.

The exhibition is mostly dedicated to real spies, but there is also fictional secret agents area. At the entrance to that room you can take a photo with 007 background. Below you can see my selfie with camera instead of gun.

There is a number of props that were used on sets of different James Bond movies. On several screens you can watch short parts of films where each prop was used.

“Skyfall” at Embankment Station in London

In “Skyfall” James Bond (Daniel Craig) was chasing Raoul Silva (Javier Bardem) in the tunnels of the London Underground. Silva came out of the Embankment Underground Station and got into a police car.

The scene in which Raoul Silva came out of the tube station was filmed on March 11th 2012 at the intersection of Northumberland Avenue and Whitehall Place in London. In fact Javier Bardem who played Raoul Silva came out of a staff entrance to the Farmes Club (3 photos below). There was a fake “UNDERGROUND” sign attached to the metal frame above the entrance.

When Silva got into a police car parked at Whitehall Place, there was another fake “UNDERGROUND” sign visible in background. It was placed above a disused Charing Cross exit, between the Playhouse Theatre and Embankment Place (photo below). Real entrance to the Embankment Underground Station is located at the end of Embankment Place.

The Playhouse Theatre and Embankment Place in LondonThere is a poster with the title of the play above the entrance to the Playhouse Theatre. In March 2012 it was “Dreamboats and Petticoats“, however for the purposes of “Skyfall” it was replaced with fictional production of “Assassins”.

When I was taking pictures for this post at the beginning of 2016, the Playhouse Theatre was performing „The End of Longing” with Matthew Perry, very well known as Chandler Bing from “Friends” TV series. At the theatre I saw enthusiastic group of people. There was Matthew Perry between them signing autographs.

The police car with Raoul Silva drove off down the Whitehall Place and turned left in front of the entrance to the Corinthia Hotel. In pictures below you can see the Whitehall Place with the illuminated facade of the Corinthia Hotel on the right side. In that hotel the official announcement of “Skyfall” movie was made at press conference held on November 3rd 2011, 50 years to the day after Sean Connery was revealed as James Bond in “Dr. No”. At the end of the street there is a Department of Energy and Climate Change. James Bond was looking at London panorama at the end of “Skyfall” from the roof of that building.

Old War Office Building as MI6 HQ

In three James Bond films the MI6 headquarters, where M’s office was located, was portrayed by the Old War Office Building in Whitehall, London.

Old War Office in London

The Old War Office – Whitehall, London

For the first time the building featured in an establishing shot in “Octopussy”. We can see Whitehall with the Trafalgar Square in background and the Old War Office on the right. Inside the office there were Miss Moneypenny (Lois Maxwell) with her assistant – Penelope Smallbone (Michaela Clavell). The producers were looking for someone to replace Lois Maxwell who was playing Miss Moneypenny from the first James Bond film. They could not find anyone for replacement so they decided to introduce the assistant.

In “A View to a Kill” James Bond reported in the MI6 office right after opening credits with Duran Duran song (read more in Duran Duran in “A View to a Kill”). Camera briefly followed one of a horse guard on the other side of Whitehall and turned over to the Old War Office. Inside the office there were 007 and Moneypenny played for the last time by Lois Maxwell. She was the same age as Roger Moore (both born in 1927), who also played in James Bond film for the last time. Lois Maxwell was Miss Moneypenny for 23 years in 14 James Bond films.

For the third time the Old War Office building was presented as MI6 headquarters in establishing shot in “Licence to Kill”, similar to the shot from “Octopussy”. The scene inside the office was filmed in a studio in Mexico.

In all three sequencies there were red double-deckers on the street. They are still present on the Whitehall.Red double-decker in fron of The Old War Office - Whitehall, LondonThe Old War Office building or actually its domed towers (one of them in picture below) returned to James Bond film in “Skyfall”.The Old War Office - Whitehall, London

At the end of the film James Bond was standing on a top of a building looking at London panorama. The scene was filmed on the roof of Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DECC). The building can be seen as first from left in a photo below and in background in the next photo. There is also the Union Flag between domed towers on the roof of the Old War Office as it was seen in “Skyfall”.

There were two domed towers on the Old War Office on the right. The Old War Office with Big Ben in background - Whitehall, London

Shortly Moneypenny joined Bond standing on the roof. In the next scene they were both talking in MI6 office. The headquarters at Vauxhall Cross (that is real headquarters of British Secret Intelligence Service) was destroyed at the beginning of the filmed so the office returned to Whitehall, but it was not clear to which building.

On October 30th 2012 I was in Berlin as accreditated photographer for German premiere of “Skyfall” that took place in Stage Theater am Potsdamer Platz.Red carpet at " Skyfall " premiere in BerlinOn the red carpet there were several actors known from other James Bond movies, such as Ludger Pistor who appeared in “Casino Royale” as the Swiss banker Mendel.

He asked James Bond to park his Range Rover, but 007 crashed the car to distract the security.

It was difficult to recognize him in the movie, because Kraft was bold and not smiling like Schick in a picture below. Veruschka von Lehndorff (first from right in the same picture) played Grafin von Wallenstein taking part in the poker match in the same film.
